Diabetes is a 4lifelong condition that can lead to other major health problems.
"This is a very serious disease. The problem is people don't always take it seriously."
Dr. Willa Hsueh with The Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center says 5diabetes 6complications can include 7cardiovascular disease, 8kidney damage or failure, and 9nerve damage.
Of the more than 38 million people in the U.S. estimated to have diabetes, around 9 million of them don't know it.
Hsueh says everyone should know early warning signs of the disease, which include frequent 10urination, extreme 11thirst and 12blurry vision.
"If you see those signs, it's very important to address them."
Type 2 diabetes is most often diagnosed in adults, but having a healthy lifestyle can help lower the risk.
Hsueh says that includes avoiding foods that are high in 13carbohydrates and fat, and having a 14consistent exercise routine with a combination of cardio and strength training.
"Sometimes if a physical trainer can be helpful not only in advising about nutrition but performing the right exercises so you don't hurt yourself."
