Unsafe lead exposure in public schools °ø¸³Çб³ ÇлýµéÀÇ ³³ Áßµ¶ À§Çè CNN Correspondent: One of the most common sources of 1exposure to 2lead is in lead paint, which was 3banned in 1978. But in buildings that were built before then and haven't been 4maintained, there can be the risk of lead exposure. And that is what Milwaukee has been dealing with. Earlier this year, they found a child had tested for high levels of lead in their blood. That 5triggered this 6investigation into where that exposure was coming from and led to the public school system. It turns out that more than 100 of their buildings were built before 1978, and not all of them have been well-maintained. So now they've been going through and doing 7inspections. They've closed a total of nine schools, just 8announcing an additional two that will be closed. Those kids will be going to school in other buildings 9for the time being. They've 10managed to reopen five after they've fixed the lead issues in those schools. But of course, four (schools) will remain closed. But this has been a huge 11undertaking. And for that reason, the city reached out to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to ask for their help with this, both for their guidance and also to send a small team to help them with things like conducting more lead screening of families, to invite them into large clinics where they can have their blood tested for lead. But because there were these really big 12layoffs to federal agencies at the beginning of April under the Trump administration, the city of Milwaukee received a letter back from a CDC official on April 3rd saying, quote, "I sincerely regret to inform you that due to the complete loss of our lead program, we will be unable to support you with this 13Epi-aid request." We heard from Milwaukee's health 14commissioner about what the effect has been of not being able to call up the CDC for help. Here's what he said. Dr. Michael Totoraitis, Health Commissioner, City of Milwaukee: The childhood-led team at the CDC really were the experts for the nation. So that's been challenging for us. It would be really nice to be able to pick up the phone and call them. Unfortunately, they're gone. CNN Correspondent: Milwaukee said they are still able to do this and they're working with different partners. And they even said that after the CDC led experts end their 15administrative leave period in June, they may try to see if they could 16temporarily hire them on to help work with them on this. But this really 17marks the fact that a local public health department has to go it alone without federal support. 1 exposure ³ëÃâ (ƯÈ÷ ÇØ·Î¿î ¹°ÁúÀ̳ª À§Çè ¿ä¼Ò¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ³ëÃâ) 2 lead ³³ (À¯ÇØ Á߱ݼÓ) 3 banned ±ÝÁöµÈ 4 maintained °ü¸®µÈ, À¯ÁöµÈ 5 triggered Ã˹ߵÈ, À¯¹ßµÈ 6 investigation Á¶»ç, ¼ö»ç 7 inspections Á¡°Ë, °Ë»ç 8 announcing ¹ßÇ¥ÇÏ´Â, °øÁöÇÏ´Â 9 for the time being ´çºÐ°£ 10 manage to °£½ÅÈ÷ ~ÇÏ´Ù, ¾î¶»°Ôµç ~Çس»´Ù 11 undertaking (Å« ±Ô¸ðÀÇ) ÀÏ, °ú¾÷, »ç¾÷ 12 layoffs Á¤¸®Çذí, °¨¿ø 13 Epi-aid ¿ªÇÐ Á¶»ç Áö¿ø (CDCÀÇ ±ä±Þ ¿ªÇÐ Á¶»ç ÇÁ·Î±×·¥ À̸§) 14 commissioner ±¹Àå, Àå°ü±Þ Ã¥ÀÓÀÚ 15 administrative leave period ÇàÁ¤ ÈÞÁ÷ ±â°£ 16 temporarily ÀϽÃÀûÀ¸·Î, Àӽ÷Π17 mark ~À» ³ªÅ¸³»´Ù, ~ÀÓÀ» º¸¿©ÁÖ´Ù
