Marilia Mendon&#231a dies in a plane crash
Marilia Mendonça, one of Brazil’s biggest contemporary singers and a Latin Grammy winner, died in a plane crash on the way to one of her concerts. Four other people, including her uncle and her producer, also died in the incident.
The plane crashed between Mendonça’s home town of Goiânia and Caratinga, a small city 350 kilometers north of Rio de Janeiro. The aircraft was around 11 kilometers from Caratinga, the singer’s destination for that evening’s gig. People launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
Mendonça was 26, and she had a two-year-old son. In 2020, she was the most listened to artist in Brazil on Spotify, and she performed in a series of online gigs. One of them set the record of the most-watched live stream in the world, with 3.3 million viewers on YouTube.
Difficult words: contemporary (current, modern), gig (a live performance), determine (to find out the facts about something).
