Baby Formula Recall Expands

A nationwide 1baby formula recall is growing as the CDC and FDA are 2investigating whether a 3powdered infant formula made by Abbott Nutrition could have contributed to the cause of death of an infant and whether several others 4were hospitalized because of it.

“This is a very serious event that needs to be taken and responded to by families in the health care community.”

Abbott Nutrition is voluntarily adding “Similac PM,” both cans and cases with lot codes 27032k80 and 27032k800, to its growing list of recalled products as parents across the country scramble to find safe options for their children.

“Basically he’5s allergic to almost all food. We 6count on this.”

Dr. Steven Abrams, a neonatologist says the recall adds to an ongoing baby formula shortage and it's creating a very difficult situation for parents.

“The families need to talk to their 7pediatricians, make sure they understand what the 8alternatives are.”

On Monday, the FDA announced a second infant died from reportedly consuming “Similac PM 60/40” with a lot code 27032k800 and 9contracting a bacterial infection. Abbott says no distributed product has tested positive for the presence of bacteria that caused the infection.

“So, the challenge is to figure out what happened and make sure it doesn't happen again.”

“Similac PM” was not included in the previous recall which involved certain lots of Similac, Alimentum and EleCare formulas. Abbott says it's 10ramping up production to 11keep up with demand as the USDA makes the 12Women, Infants Children program more 13flexible to give parents more options.
