New Safe Sleep Guidelines For Babies

For the first time in six years, the American Academy of Pediatrics has updated its safe sleep guidelines for babies.

“There are lots of factors that play into the 1dangers.”

The AAP says 2co-sleeping 3under any circumstances is not safe for infant sleep whether it’s on the 4couch or a bed.

“We recognize sometimes you may 5unintentionally 6fall asleep with the baby. So I recommend that, that parents create kind of a safe sleep zone in the bed when they do this 7feeding, to move away the 8pillows, the 9loose 10bedding things that, that could create that added risk.”

Parents can also set alarms to help remind them to take their child back to the 11crib. The AAP says babies should sleep in the same room with their parents for at least six months, 12separately on a firm flat surface covered in a snug, fitted sheet with no added bedding or 13bumpers.

“You wanna avoid anything that’s soft, 14plush or loose. Babies start to move around. We don’t want things getting up over their heads. We don’t want 15overheating. We don’t want things to 16obstruct the nose and mouth that increase the risk of 17suffocation.”

The AAP also warns against the use of commercial devices that claim to reduce the risk of 18SIDS or other sleep-related issues, including wearable monitors.
