Dueling Diets: Intermittent Fasting Or Counting Calories?
다이어트 대결: 간헐적 단식 또는 칼로리 계산법?
A new study making headlines suggests a popular 1weight loss method may not be as 2effective as once thought. The study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association tracked the 3portion sizes and 4eating times of 547 people, and data on their health and weight for six years. Researchers found no 5association between 6restricting eating times like the trend of 7intermittent fasting and weight loss. What the study did find effective? Smaller meals.
Julia Zumpano, registered 8dietitian with the Cleveland Clinic Center for Human Nutrition, is among experts who caution the sample size of the study was small and the participants not as diverse as the larger population. She sees some benefits in limiting the timing of meals.
“Intermittent fasting can decrease the amount of insulin that you produce. So it can lead to 9reduction in fat storage. 10Fasting can also help lower blood 11triglycerides, 12blood sugar, in certain cases, it can lower blood pressure and cholesterol.”
Whether narrowing meal times or counting Calories, Zumpano says it’s important to find an approach that’s 13realistic for you.
“No one likes to be told you cannot eat, you cannot do this. So just being able to set boundaries on when you can and cannot do things can really help you attain those goals.”
The US dietary guidelines for Americans recommends focusing 85 percent of your food on 14nourishment and the rest, for a little enjoyment and 15indulgence.
