Americans are closing in on 1$1 trillion of 2credit card debt right now. U. S. 3consumers are carrying $986 billion in card debt, according to a report from the 4Federal Reserve Bank of New York. And what makes this year unusual is that 5borrowers didn't 6pay down debt at the beginning of the year. The New York Fed says it was the first time in 20 years it didn't see a 7decrease. It believes 8inflation and higher prices are the reasons why. And those are also believed to be the reasons behind the rise in near record high credit card balances.
So, how do you pay down that debt? CNBC looked at ways to help you get your balance lower. First off, you'll need to 9reassess your 10spending, and that means making sure you have a basic budget in place. Experts say you can't expect to 11tackle debt if you don't know how much money is coming in and going out every month. Next, pick what 12method you'll use to 13pay off the debt. The 14avalanche method has you listing debts from highest to lowest based on the15 interest rate.
The snowball method puts a 16priority on your smallest debts first, regardless of the rate. You pay those off and build 17momentum. And look for a zero-balance transfer card.
