Robot Rules: Congress Takes On AI
로봇 규제: 인공지능에 대한 조치를 취하려는 미 의회
The next big thing in 1technology is already here and 2congress is 3playing catch up.
“Too often we have seen what happens when technology 4outpaces 5regulation.”
A Senate Judiciary Subcommittee hearing kicking off Tuesday with those 6AI generator 7remarks. OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman 8testifying amid concerns 9sparked in part by the technology behind his company's chatbot tool, Chat GPT.
“My worst fears are that we cause significant harm to the world.”
Artificial intelligence has generated many fears 10replacing or 11disrupting human jobs, spreading misinformation, 12perpetuating biases, becoming too 13prolific or powerful.
“I think if this technology goes wrong, it can go quite wrong.”
And it's strong 14skepticism from the public, 15lawmakers and even the tech industry.
“I can't recall when we've had people representing large corporations come before us and 16plead with us to 17regulate them.”
Altman said he is mindful of the risks, but there are benefits to 18pursuing the technology responsibly.
“We are working to build tools that one day can help us make new discoveries and address some of humanity's biggest challenges, like climate change and curing cancer.”
Lawmakers noting the 19federal government's failure to regulate social media serving as a wake up call.
“Sensible safeguards are not 20in opposition to innovation.”
As AI's real potential remains uncertain.
“What kind of an innovation is it going to be? Is it gonna be like the printing press? Or is it gonna be more like the atom bomb?”
