Devastating Wildfires Continue To Rage Across Hawaii
하와이 전역에서 계속되는 최악의 산불
1Ferocious flames 2singing buildings in Lahaina Maui. The Hawaiian Island is known for its 3lush vegetation. Now many areas along the western coast look like this 4engulfed in 5flames and smoke, 6charred buildings and ash.
"People stuck in traffic, trying to get out. And there's flame on both sides of the road like something out of a horror movie."
7Wildfires are 8devastating sections of Maui as well as portions of Hawaii's big island. Hospitals in Maui 9are overwhelmed with burn patients and people suffering from 10smoke inhalation. Officials say people are jumping in the waters just to 11desperately 12flee the flames.
"We just feel so sad and just great sympathy and prayers."
Dry conditions and strong winds from Hurricane Dora in the Pacific are making the situation much worse. The military and National Guard are sending helicopters and personnel to 13fight the fires. But the flames are 14nowhere near 15contained.
"Our entire street was burned to the ground."
The winds inflames knocking out cell towers in Maui, shutting down communication, including 911 services, making rescue efforts difficult and 16assessing the damage even harder.
"We really don't have all of the details on exactly how many structures are damaged. But we do know power is out. They've been problems with water."
The Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu is 17being turned into a shelter for those fleeing the fires. Airlines are also canceling flights, 18discouraging non-essential travel to Maui.
