Race to Save Villagers Trapped in Flooded Cave

1Rescuers on Wednesday located 5 of the 7 villagers 2trapped in a3 flooded 4cave in the 5landlocked Southeast Asian nation of Laos.

They were found alive.

"So next slide I take them one by one."

Getting those individuals out is the next phase, which rescuers said they hoped to begin Thursday while continuing to search for two more people still missing.

The villagers entered The Cave more than a week ago in search of gold, but heavy rain 6triggered flash flooding, which blocked the exit.

Specialist cave divers were brought in for the 7harrowing mission of locating and 8extracting the villagers.

"There's no maps of this place. Diving is so difficult with restrictions where you can't move, turn around. The visibility is zero."

Rescuers 9encountering toxic 10hydrogen sulfide gas and issues 11deploying a pump into The Cave to supply fresh air.

Support teams working to pump as much water out of The Cave system as possible to help speed up the rescue and perhaps lower water levels enough to allow the survivors to 12crawl out themselves if it's safer than extraction.

The five survivors located Wednesday were found 13atop the highest 14non-submerged area they could find a chamber deep underground.

"There's a 15terminal chamber. It has an 16elevated dry section, it's quite high, so there's gas to breathe for a few days at least."

동남아시아 내륙국인 라오스에서 수해로 침수된 동굴에 고립됐던 주민 7명 가운데 5명이 수요일 구조대에 의해 발견됐습니다.

주민들은 금을 찾기 위해 일주일여 전 동굴에 들어갔지만, 폭우로 인해 갑작스러운 홍수가 발생하면서 출구가 막혔습니다.

고립된 주민들의 위치를 확인하고 동굴 밖으로 빼내기 위해 전문 동굴 잠수부들을 투입했습니다.

"이곳에 대한 지도는 없습니다. 몸을 움직이거나 방향을 바꾸기조차 어려울 정도로 좁은 구간이 많아 잠수가 매우 어렵습니다. 시야도 거의 확보되지 않습니다."

구조대는 구조 과정에서 유독성 황화수소 가스에 직면했으며, 동굴 내부에 신선한 공기를 공급하기 위한 펌프를 설치하는 데에도 어려움을 겪고 있습니다.

한편 지원 인력들은 구조를 앞당기기 위해 동굴에 차오른 물을 최대한 빼내는 작업을 벌이고 있습니다. 또한 수위가 충분히 낮아질 경우, 생존자들이 직접 기어서 빠져나오는 것이 구조대에 의한 이송보다 더 안전한지 여부도 검토하고 있습니다.

수요일 발견된 생존자 5명은 지하 깊숙한 곳에 있는 공간 가운데 물에 잠기지 않은 가장 높은 지점에서 발견됐습니다.

"동굴 가장 안쪽에 있는 공간에는 물에 잠기지 않은 높은 지대가 있습니다. 상당히 높은 곳에 위치해 있어 최소 며칠 동안은 호흡할 수 있는 공기가 확보된 상태입니다."
