1Frantic search and rescue efforts are 2underway after 3catastrophic flooding hit parts of Nepal and China Wednesday.
Hundreds are dead, many more are missing.
"I said bye to them and I didn't think it was the last time I was ever going to see them."
Among the missing hundreds of foreign nationals, Chitrak Sharma has been desperately searching for information about his parents, who were travelling in Nepal with a group from Australia.
"I've been calling hospitals. I just want to find my parents. I would do anything just to bring them home."
Another man is looking for his 14-year-old niece from New York and her mother, whom he last spoke with on Wednesday morning, just over an hour before the flood struck.
They are just two of the dozens of Americans the State Department says are 4unaccounted for.
An area along the Nepal-China border was struck by a 5monstrous 6flood wave of water, ice and rock that traveled down the river valley at an estimated 120 mph, swallowing up everything in its path.
Scientists say the wave started after an 7enormous chunk of 8glacier 9broke off from high on a mountain and fell thousands of feet to a river below.
Authorities have warned that the area could see more flooding after the water levels of a newly formed lake on the Nepal side have started rising.
There is also the threat of 10monsoon rains in the forecast.
"Getting around Nepal in the best of days is difficult, made more difficult during the monsoon season as roads 11wash out. But this river basically splits Nepal in half. So all of the main roadways, trade 12arteries, everything in this is destroyed. For rescue teams, the only real way to access the areas will be by helicopter."

수백 명이 숨졌고, 더 많은 사람들이 실종됐습니다.
“그들에게 작별 인사를 했지만, 그것이 다시는 그들을 보지 못하게 될 마지막 순간이 될 줄은 몰랐습니다.”
실종된 수백 명의 외국인 가운데 치트라크 샤르마는 네팔을 여행 중인 부모님의 소식을 필사적으로 찾고 있습니다. 샤르마의 부모는 호주에서 온 한 단체와 함께 네팔을 여행하고 있었습니다.
“병원에 계속 전화해 보고 있습니다. 그냥 부모님을 찾고 싶고, 집으로 모셔올 수만 있다면 뭐든 할 겁니다.”
또 다른 남성은 뉴욕에서 온 14살 조카와 조카의 어머니를 찾고 있으며, 그는 수요일 아침 홍수가 발생하기 한 시간여 전에 마지막으로 이들과 통화했습니다.
이들은 미국 국무부가 소재를 파악하지 못한 것으로 밝힌 수십 명의 미국인 가운데 두 명입니다.
네팔과 중국 국경을 따라 있는 지역에 엄청난 규모의 홍수로 발생한 거대한 물결이 덮쳤고, 물과 얼음, 바위가 뒤섞인 거대한 물결이 강 계곡을 따라 시속 약 120마일(약 193km)의 속도로 내려오면서 지나는 곳마다 모든 것을 휩쓸어갔습니다.
과학자들은 산 높은 곳에서 거대한 빙하 덩어리가 떨어져 나와 수천 피트 아래에 있는 강으로 떨어지면서 이 거대한 물결이 시작된 것으로 보고 있습니다.
당국은 네팔 측에 새로 형성된 호수의 수위가 상승하기 시작하면서 이 지역에 추가 홍수가 발생할 수 있다고 경고했습니다.
몬순 비가 내릴 가능성도 예보되고 있습니다.
“평소에도 네팔을 돌아다니는 것은 쉽지 않고, 몬순철에는 도로가 유실되면서 이동이 더욱 어려워집니다. 그런데 이 강이 사실상 네팔을 둘로 가르고 있습니다. 그래서 주요 도로와 교역로를 비롯해 이 지역의 모든 주요 이동로가 파괴됐습니다. 구조대가 이 지역에 접근할 수 있는 사실상 유일한 방법은 헬리콥터뿐입니다.”
