Unhappy people watch 30% more TV than happy people. Specifically, people who are happy watch roughly nineteen hours of TV per week, while unhappy people watch twenty five hours per week. The conclusion crosses all demographic borders, including age, education, income, and marital status.
Past research has shown that people rank TV watching as very enjoyable, with the activity scoring just below eight on a scale of one (dislike) to ten (greatly enjoy). Yet TV can also bring about antisocial behavior. Some people push aside more positive activities that have lasting benefits, such as watching programs and movies instead of pursuing social activities with friends and family. Some people even push aside meaningful moments in relationships. Because humans are social creatures, the solitary activity may harm the long term mental health of people. |
