What was earlier just a trivial process in the sciences now is crucial for the higher education segment in general. Once the internationalization of the global education started, it was just a matter of time for the language to become the dominant one. The United States of America is the land, where 99% of research and development is focused. Besides, it¡¯s known for being the birthplace of the internet that was initially developed in English. The countries that represent the Scandinavian region were the first to officially recognize that English is the language to dominate. The rest of the European countries followed them as well. According to the estimations of the British Council, by 2015 three billion individuals on the globe will be speaking English and two billion will be engaged in learning it. The well-known Bologna Process that covers 46 countries has not only founded a European Higher Education Area, but also contributed greatly to promoting the English language as the education lingua franca. Japanese experts of the Hokkaido University recognized that for a country that uses its language exclusively within its borders, using English as the instruction language is the best way to hook the foreign students. In the era of internalization and globalization of higher education, the only opportunity to attract students from the other parts of the globe is to provide courses in English.Moreover, this language is the lingua franca of the area of commerce since a lot of organizations switch to English as their corporate language. The language provides them with a global perspective, which means they are no longer associated with a particular culture or brand, but belong to the world society. Modernity is the synonym for the English language. More often than not, all the contracts between the corporations that represent different languages are drafted in English. In addition, a lot of international tenders require an English version of the offers. As for the diplomacy, this is where English is getting to the top of the list of the most popular languages, with a new generation of highly qualified diplomats being trained in the USA and UK colleges and universities. You won¡¯t find the place, where it is more obvious than in European Union agencies and institutions that English is the supranational language. Clearly, our world is a global village and we all have something in common – the lingua franca.
