Kaneale Cornell is a Richland One parent with a three year-old daughter who attends Caughman Road Elementary. When her daughter came home one day, this is what happened next.
"I said, 'How was school?' And she said, 'Mom, there were rats.' And I said, 'Rats? What do you mean?' And she said, 'There are rats in our classroom. There's rat 4droppings, our teachers had to clean it and they were 5chasing one with a broom'."
These photos you see here are the conditions at both Satchel Rord Elementary and AC Flora High School, pictures of rats and 6roaches 7crawling the hallway floors and 8mold in some areas.
Several parents brought those 9concerns to the Richland One 10school board meeting earlier this week. Richland One officials say they were already aware of the conditions.
In fact, there have been seven confirmed schools that have seen rodent activity in the past 30 days listed here.
In a statement to WACH FOX News, a Richland One spokesperson is saying, "We take all these issues very seriously because our priority is always the health and safety of our students and staff. Reported issues are 11addressed, but we also focus on 12preventative measures, such as 13decluttering spaces, 14plugging/15sealing openings where 16rodents can get in, keeping exterior doors closed, and not eating or storing food in classrooms and other areas outside of our cafeterias."
"People can get sick long-term with the effects of mold with rat droppings."
Cornell says she's not only concerned for the well being of her child and other students, but also teachers and other staff, saying these kinds of issues 17disrupt the learning environment.
"It's not an environment that we want our workers in or that we want our children in."
