The city has already opened nearly 200 facilities for asylum seekers. The Adams administration maintains New York is at capacity and the White House needs to act. Wednesday night, 4Mayor Adams visited the line of asylum seekers.
"What are you hearing from the White House about this right now?"
"That's the problem. We're not hearing enough."
"What you're seeing here in this street, we've done everything possible. The 5federal government is responsible for what you're seeing here tonight."
New York 6legislators met with the 7Homeland Security Secretary last week asking for 8federal aid. That includes 9expediting work 10authorization for asylum seekers so they can 11legally get jobs.
"We need 12access to federal sites. We need a federal 13declaration so that we can unlock more funds and more sites. And we need a national 14decompression 15strategy.
Now, City Hall is 16considering 17erecting a tent on Randall's Island to house some 2,000 migrants on soccer fields. Public 18Advocate Jumaane Williams suggests the Feds open military 19vessels like the 20U.S.S Comfort.
"President Biden, maybe you need to come down and see what's going on for yourself."
After touring the Roosevelt Hotel Wednesday, Williams said the 21lack of urgency from Biden hurts asylum seekers and hurts his favor ahead of the upcoming 22election cycle.
