"That¡¯s when I had 2hopped the fence and I started running."
Seconds earlier, Caleb and his teammate Duval Rodriguez and a coach saw this car 3careened 4out of control on Sunrise Boulevard.
"The car had hit the back of another car and then kept flying through this red light and then flew through the red light and 5smacked into the pole, the 6electrical pole. And so we ran over there, I was trying to open up the door. Um... but there was wires everywhere and the 7explosionhappened again, once we were right next to the car."
This video shows the players trying to pull the driver, 63-year-old Charles Sydnor to safety.
"But the guy 8was passed out in the car. And we were knocking and nothing was happening. And I turned around and this woman had a bat and I never got her name but she handed me this bat. And I ended up breaking the window um and then reaching my hand inside and unlocking the car. Three other guys came in and then grabbed that guy and pulled him out of the car. A minute after they laid him on the grass, the whole car 9caught flames."
Sydnor¡¯s family says their father had a medical episode that caused him to 10lose control. They sent this message to those who saved him.
"I wanna thank them for their courage and their quick response for helping my father out of that vehicle ¡®cause it could have been a lot, lot lot worse. 11On behalf of my father, the whole Charles family, we wanna thank you, thank you, thank you."
Caleb credits his faith with guiding him to run toward that car and says he does not believe in 12coincidences.
"That happened exactly how it was supposed to happen and Jesus put me in those other people in that situation to help that man and save his life. I just, I pray that Jesus heals him and I¡¯m thankful that he¡¯s still alive and he¡¯s still on this earth to walk more days."
