¡°I need fuel.¡±
¡°Doc Brown returns with his modern flying car and it¡¯s powered by nuclear fusion.¡±
In 1985, it was considered 3futuristic, fast forward to 2022, and the idea of using fusion to fuel our cars just got one step closer to 4becoming reality. The U.S. Department of Energy announcing Tuesday that scientists have figured out a way to 5mimic the way the Sun produces energy.
¡°So, today, we tell the world that America has achieved a 6tremendous scientific breakthrough.¡±
A team of scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory¡¯s National Ignition Facility in California used 192 high powered lasers to fire upon hydrogen atoms. The pressure and heat fused them together 7unleashing energy.
¡°This would one day become something real. Something that is the 8foundation of power plants.¡±
This is the first time ever that scientists produced more energy from fusion than the laser energy used to power the experiment. While there are many more steps until this can be commercially viable, it could 9revolutionize efforts to slow climate change across the globe.
¡°This 10milestone moves us one significant step closer to the possibility of 11zero carbon 12abundant fusion energy powering our society.¡±
