¡°We¡¯ve had like huge crowds coming down to watch. And, we¡¯ll 1cram about 30 people into that room.¡±
At Carver Senior Living Facility, it¡¯s a 2packed house with a playoff atmosphere.
¡°Two, one, go!¡±
The 3residents have gathered to 4cheer on the hometown River Rats... a lean, mean 5forklift racing team.
¡°6Keep our composure, and don¡¯t 7panic. Everybody 8watch out for me. You never know where I¡¯ll be.¡±
Every Thursday at 1:00, the River Rats 9face off 10virtually against another group of 11seniors in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
¡°It¡¯s very 12competitive and you have to really be 13team-oriented to do this.¡±
They use remote-controlled forklifts to pick up 14loads and place them around the 15arena. The first team to deliver all 4 loads to a new location, 16wins the shift.
¡°Harder than it looks. You gotta be seriously aware of whether you wanna go forwards or backwards... whether you wanna turn left or right.¡±
All while trying not to 17collide with your teammates.
¡°What I learned during my career was that aging is a team sport.¡±
Dr. Bill Thomas invented the National Forklift Racing League to help seniors exercise hand-eye coordination, while 18building camaraderie. He¡¯s tuning in from Ithaca, New York.
¡°A lot of people, when they think about aging and old age, they think about what people can¡¯t do. And forklift racing is about what people can do.¡±
Turns out, they can do a lot. There is a little bit of senior 19smack talk. And the crowd 20goes wild whenever the River Rats come through.
