Thankfully, she says she 4recovered completely within a few hours. ¡°Only about 10% of strokes occur in people less than 50 years of age, so it¡¯s probably not 5on their radar screen.¡± While strokes in younger people aren¡¯t common, the president of the American Heart Association says the numbers are 6trending up. ¡°People are heavier at younger ages and that means they have more risk factors for stroke including things like higher 7blood pressure and 8diabetes. Smoking is always a risk factor for stroke.¡± When it comes to a stroke, getting care as quickly as possible is 9crucial. And one word can help you remember and identify symptoms. ¡°It¡¯s called FAST. F-A-S-T. The F stands for 10facial drooping, so if one side of your face is suddenly drooping, 11pay attention. The A stands for arm or leg weakness on one side. The S stands for speech difficulty and the T means time to call 911.¡± Young people should also ¡°know their numbers.¡± Talk to their doctor about blood pressure, 12blood sugar and blood cholesterol which are all things that can contribute to stroke risk. And make a plan to control those, if need be.
