Rock icon Meat Loaf has died at the age of 74; he is best known for one of the best-selling albums of all time ¡®Bat Out of Hell¡¯. Star sold 100 million albums worldwide, and he also appeared in movies like Fight Club or Wayne¡¯s World. The Dallas-born singer was born Marvin Lee Aday; however, he got his nickname when his father said that Marvin looked as red as meat at birth, and a high school football coach added the ¡®loaf¡¯. In a 2010 interview, he spoke about his distinctive and dramatic vocal style that ranged over three octaves. A school offered that he study opera; however, he said that he was too rebellious for that. Meat Loaf released a series of albums in the late 1970s and 1980s, and in 1993, he earned a Grammy Award for the single ¡®I¡¯d Do Anything For Love (But I Won¡¯t Do That)¡¯. Bat Out of Hell remains one of the top 10 biggest-selling albums ever, alongside albums by Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and the Eagles. Difficult words: icon (a very famous person with great influence or significance), nickname (a familiar or humorous name given to a person instead of his real name), octave (the distance between two musical notes or sounds). |
