Prince Philip died on Friday aged 99; he was the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, and a leading figure in the British Royal Family for almost seven decades. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle. Though outspoken and irascible, Philip lived in the shadow of the woman that he married at Westminster Abbey in 1947. He always walked a step behind his queen at the thousands of ceremonial events that they attended during her reign, the longest in British history. In a rare personal tribute, the queen once called him her strength and stay, and although Philip had no official role, he was one of the most influential figures in the royal family. He was often criticized for his demeanor and for remarks that caused offense; however, he brought wit, intelligence and energy to the monarchy. The royal couple had four children: Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward. Difficult words: Royal Highness (a name that is used to address members of a royal family), irascible (irritable or easily provoked to anger), stay (keeping someone strong), demeanor (behavior towards others). |
