The perfectly preserved carcass of an Ice Age cave bear has just been discovered by reindeer herders in Russia. The remains were revealed by melting permafrost on Great Lyakhovsky Island in the far north of the country. The animal¢¥s internal organs, teeth, and even nose were all intact, which caused a lot of excitement among scientists. Such a discovery is unique because previously, scientists were only able to study the bones of this extinct predator. A preliminary analysis indicates that the adult bear lived 22,000 to 39,500 years ago. The melting ice in Arctic Russia has led to a number of major discoveries recently, including mammoths, wooly rhinos, deer, wolves, and cave lion cubs. Difficult words: carcass (the dead body of an animal), permafrost (a thick layer of soil that remains in the polar regions throughout the year), intact (not damaged). |
