There has been a continuing E. coli outbreak with more than a hundred reported cases in at least 23 US states. E. coli is a bacterium found in the intestines of humans and other animals, and it can cause severe food poisoning. People have been hospitalized, and some of them developed kidney failure. Health officials say that they are working to locate the exact source of the infections which are linked to romaine lettuce harvested from Salinas, California. Consumers are advised not to eat romaine lettuce from the Salinas area, and producers are requested to take the lettuce off the market for the rest of the growing season.
