The following hypothesis on the future of the human race sounds more like a sci-fi potboiler than scientific theory. Evolutionary theorist Oliver Curry proposes that we will one day evolve into two separate and distinct species. Although that lies in the far future, on the order of 100,000 years, the species will be based on the haves and the have nots. Over the coming millennium, we will see some small changes. For example, humankind will grow taller, with the likely average somewhere between 6-7 feet (182-213 centimeters). Humans will also live roughly 120 years. Increased availability to resources, cosmetic and genetic therapies, and surgeries will bring about a more homogenous appearance in the respective genders, too. What's more, races will likely go the way of the dodo, and all humans will have interbred to produce a skin hue the color of a coffee latte. That's the good news. However, our reliance on technology could eventually affect us for the worse, especially if technology becomes a crutch rather than a tool. According to Curry, people will rely on technology rather than one another, and lose many social skills and empathy in the process. Our immune systems won't be as robust as now. Medicines will fight off disease and lower mortality rates so successfully that weak genes will then spread and affect our species as a whole. Curry predicts this to occur around 10,000 years from now. Further down this dark road, in the year 100,000, the genetically healthy will only breed with one another to produce a beautiful and intelligent ruling class. For the genetically unhealthy, the have nots, they will continue to degrade, becoming squat and ugly, and with inferior intelligence. In other words, humans will breed themselves into rulers and slaves. |
